Met dat dubbele werkingsmechanisme heeft deze opiaat ook een veelbelovend profiel voor de behandeling van neuropathische pijnen. ^[1]

Ook de bijwerking op het niveau van de darmen is bij tapentadol een stuk minder dan bij andere opiaten. ^[2]

Vandaar dat de onderzoekers menen: 

The combination of these reduced treatment discontinuation rates and tapentadol efficacy for the relief of moderate to severe nociceptive and neuropathic pain may offer an improvement in pain therapy by increasing patient compliance with their treatment regimen.^[2]

Uit een studie blijkt dat tapentadol net zo goed is als oxicodon, met als voordeel dat patienten minder misselijk zijn en minder hoeven te braken.^[4]

Ook zijn er studies gedaan naar de werkzaamheid van de stof bij vormen van artose. ^{[5] [6]} Tapentadol wordt wel gezien als een alternatief voor de sterk werkzame opiaten. ^[7]

Tapentadol is in Nederland nog niet te verkrijgen, maar is in de VS al toegelaten. ^[8] We lezen de aankondiging even mee:

The drug, FDA said, activates opioid receptors in the brain, spinal cord, and gastrointestinal tract and inhibits the reuptake of norepinephrine. Inhibition of norepinephrine uptake “possibly” produces an analgesic effect, the agency said.

Official labeling for the new product has not been released by the company or FDA. The company said tapentadol still needs a brand name and placement in a controlled-substance schedule.

According to the company’s press release, tapentadol must not be used in patients with paralytic ileus or patients who are using, or have used within the past 14 days, a monoamine oxidase inhibitor. Tapentadol is also contraindicated in any situation in which a mu-opioid-receptor agonist must not be used, such as when the patient has significant respiratory depression.
