IVIG: oproep tot selectief gebruik

Intraveneuze immuungloblines van de IgG klasse, oftewel IVIG worent in toenemende mate binnen de neurologie ingezet als eerste behandeling voor o.a. de ziekte van Guillain Barre en de CIDP. De auteurs van een overzichtsartikel over de inzet van IVIG bij een aantal neurologische ziektebeelden roepen op tot kritische inzet van dit dure middel. Ook stellen de auteurs dat het werkingsmechanisme van IVIG nog steeds onduidelijk is.

... IVIG can be considered currently as the first-line treatment in Guillain-Barré syndrome, chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy and multifocal motor neuropathy, and it may be used as a rescue therapy in worsening myasthenia gravis.

The awareness of risks and complications of IVIG therapy has increased, but severe side effects are still considered rare. Due to increasing costs of this treatment, careful selection of patients who will benefit from IVIG is extremely important. ^[1]
