Sebivo (telbivudine), van Novartis is een middel dat ingezet kan worden bij de behandeling van hepatitis B. De CHMP, de commissie in Europa die over goedkeuringen van geneesmiddelen gaat, bepaalde dat op basis van de gegevens het volgende bekend moest worden:
Sebivo en perifere neuropathiePeripheral neuropathy has been uncommonly reported in telbivudine-treated patients. If peripheral neuropathy is suspected, treatment with telbivudine should be reconsidered. An increased risk of peripheral neuropathy has been observed when telbivudine and pegylated interferon alfa-2a are co-administered. Such increased risk cannot be excluded for other interferons alfa (pegylated or standard). Moreover, the benefit of this combination of telbivudine with interferon alfa (pegylated or standard) is not currently established. Hier kunt u het EMEA document over Telbivudine en neuropathie. Naast neuropathie kan telbivudine ook myopathie verzoorzaken, dit is schade aan de spieren.[1] En vooral als het ingezet wordt samen met een bepaalde vorm van interferon. Door de mitochondriale toxiciteit van deze antivirale stoffen, kunnen er op langere termijn neuropathieen, myopathieen ontstaan.[2] Wanneer neuropathie optreedt tijdens het gebruikt van belbivudine, dan is het goed om de therapie te heroverwegen.
