Subacute myelo-optische neuropathie

Subacute myelo-optische neuropathie, Het woord zegt het al. Subacute myelo-optische neuropathie wordt ook met SMON afgekort. Het is een aandoening van het zenuwstelsel, dat zich uit in afwijkingen in het ruggemerg (myelo-) en tevens de oogzenuwen (- optisch), leidend tot een vrij ernstige verlamming, blindheid en zelfs dood. Een epidemie van SMON, vermoedelijk door de giftige en neurotoxic effect van grote dosissen van clioquinol, kwam in Japan voor tijdens jaren '60' van de vorige eeuw en meer dan 10.000 mensen werden aangdaan.

MRI afwijkingen bij SMON zij n duidelijk waarneembaar, o.a. in het meylum van de nek. ^[1] Vooral in Japan kent de ziekte nog steeds grote en wetenschappelijke belangstelling. ^[2]^[3]^[4]^[5]^[6]
