Pfizer is working on consolidating its pipeline in pain, based on some new leads and other steps to strenghten their position in the market of neuropathic pain. They are working on compounds and innovations for: 

1. Peripheral neuropathic pain
2. Central neuropathic pain
3. Post-operative pain

S,S-reboxetineS,S-reboxetine, a selective Norepinephrine Reuptake Inhibitor. S,S- reboxetine has to help fulfill the unmet need gap related to side-effects of other neuropathic analgesic drugs.

Potent, selective, antagonists of CC chemokine receptor 2 (CCR2): its efficacy in nociceptive and neuropathic models of pain comparable to celecoxib and gabapentin respectively.

On research focus os on voltage-gated sodium ion channels, as these channels may  play critical role in pain transduction and conduction. Program has been set up to invent selective NaV 1.7 modulators for these channels.

In  total Pfizer claimed last year to have 11 Compounds in Clinical Testing in the field of pain.

In recent years there have been very few breakthrough medicines for the treatment of chronic pain, with many of the current standard medicines dating back decades (if not centuries). The result of this is that there are still millions of patients across the world for whom there is no adequate medicine to treat their pain. The impact of pain is profound. Frequent sufferers are stopped from working, sleeping, and socializing, with a common result of depression.

Pfizer’s pain team hopes that new insights into the causes of pain, and new ways to actually ‘measure’ it, can help usher in a series of new medicines that will provide greater relief from the symptoms of pain, allowing patients to return to normal lives at work and at home.
