Diabetic painful neuropathy treated with palmitoylethanolamide (Normast®)

This patient visits our clinic already for more than one year for thetreatment of painful neuropathy, and initially he was a good responderon our treatment protocol, consisting of TENS, topical analgesic creamsand certain supplements, as well as neuroacupuncture. Since some monthspain is increasing again, and we started treatment withpalmitoylethanolamide (Normast), a body own fatty compound, related toanandamide and proven to have analgesic activity in neuropathic pain inmany patients in several clinical trials described on this site and in literature. [1][2][3][4]

Normast is registered asmedical food and so far in our clinic we did not see any side effects. This patient too responded well to the addition of Normast to his treatment scedule. Normal dose is twice daily 600 mg, starting with granules sublibgual for 10 days, then 10 days twice daily 600 mg tablets and in case of early response, decrease dose to twice daily 300 mg, otherwise keep going with twice daily 600 mg Normast up to 6 weeks.

November 2010, prof.dr. Jan M. Keppel Hesselink,MD,  treating pain specialist.
