Een polyneuropathie kan aan kanker voorafgaan. En een neuropathie kan ook tijdens kanker optreden. Onafhankelijk van de behandeling met een chemokuur of bestraling. Dat noemen artsen een paraneoplastische neuropathie. Deze vorm van neuropathie kan bij vrijwel elke tumor gevonden worden.
Elk jaar zijn er weer meldingen van neuropathie bij kanker, die we nog nooit eerder gevonden hebben, zoals bij een bepaalde vorm van galblaaskanker.[1] Ook vormen van neuropathie zoals de CIDP kunnen gevonden worden in de context van kanker. [2] Ook kunnen er polyneuropathiesyndromen ontstaan, bijvoorbeeld als het ruggenmerg ook aangedaan wordt. Dat heet dan paraneoplastische myeloneuropathie.[3] Of een gegeneraliseerde vorm van spierzwakte die erbij komt.[4] Gelukkig zijn paraneoplastische syndromen vrij zeldzaam.[2] Men denkt dat de oorzaak van deze neuropathie ligt in een ontsporing van het immuunsysteem. [6] Behandelen met steroiden geeft soms een positief effect.[3]
