What sorts of peripheral neuropathies?
There are a great number, probably more than 100 different types of peripheral neuropathy. And all these neuropathies have their specific characteristics, different causes, typical set of symptoms, different patterns of development, and prognosis. Peripheral neuropathies are in general classified on the basis of the nerves that are primarily affected.

In peripheral neuropathies there are impaired function of one, two or all three types of nerves we have, the motor, sensory, and the autonomic nerves.

Neuropathy due to motor, sensory and/or autonomous nerve disorder

Motor nerves control all voluntary movements of our muscles, such as those used for writing, walking, running and even smiling. Muscle weakness is the most common symptom of neuropathies damaging the motor nerves.

Sensory nerves transmit information about feeling of touch or pain and also were my body parts are in the space I am. Damage to the sensory nerves impair  the ability to feel touch, resulting in a feeling of numbness, mostly in the feet, and sometimes also in the hands.

Autonomic nerves regulate all important biological activitiesun consciously, such as heart beat, breathing, gut movements, and gland functions. Diarrhea, constipation, or incontinence can be symptoms of impaired autonbomic nerves to the gut.

From the Centre for the study and treatment of neuropathic pain and neuropathy in Soest, the Nertherlands

This site helps patients and treating physicians, neurologists, anesthesiologists and other pain specialists to find the best and most up to date research findings related to neuropathy and neuropathic pain and the treatment thereof.

In our centre we are specialised in treating patients suffering from neuropathic pain and neuropathy following an Integrated Medicine concept. Part of our activities are within the field of consultation. We assist pharmaceutical companies in R&D strategies related to finding new drugs to treat neuropathic pain and neuropathy.
