Een arts had in het blad AIDS Clinical Care April 30, 2007 commentaar gegeven op een studie naar cannabis bij pijnlijke neuropathische pijn. Het commentaar is hieronder te lezen. In een dubbel blind gerandomiseerde studie werden 50 HIV geinfecteerde patienten met pijnlijke neuropathie verdeeld over twee groepen. De actieve groep rookte 3 maal per dag cannabis en de andere groep rookte cannabis waar de actieve stoffen waren uitgehaald. Na 1 week bleek de pijn met 34% te zijn verminderd in de actieve groep ten opzichte van 17% in de placebogroep.^[1]

Comment:

Despite relatively low concentrations of active cannabinoids, the marijuana cigarettes used in this study reduced chronic pain associated with peripheral neuropathy and also alleviated acute pain. The level of pain relief was comparable to, or better than, that seen with other drugs, such as anticonvulsants and tricyclic antidepressants, that have been evaluated for peripheral neuropathy. Legal issues with the medical use of marijuana abound, but I think that clinicians and patients who are comfortable with the concept of therapeutic cannabis use can explore its usefulness in ameliorating painful peripheral neuropathy, especially in situations in which other approaches have failed.^[2]

Deze studie staat niet op zich, een andere studie uit 2009 liet ook zien dat Cannabis bij patienten die niet goed reageerden op andere pijnstillers, duidelijke effecten had! ^[3]
