Acetyl-l-Carnitine bij chemokuur

Het gebruik van acetyl-l-carnitine tijdens de chemokuur beïnvloedt de effectiviteit van de chemokuur niet. Dat was al min of meer duidelijk door de farmacologie van de stof te kennen, maar in 2009 is in een proefdiermodel duidelijk aangetoond dat je acetyl-l-carnitine kunt geven naast een chemokuur.

Er is geen sprake van een negatieve beïnvloeding van de cytostatica.^[1]^[2]

Waarom is dit belangrijk? Omdat sommige geleerden aangeven dat het zinvol is om acetyl-l-carnitine te geven tijdens of na een chemokuur om de neuropathische symptomen te verminderen en de zenuwfunctie te verbeteren:

The present studies support the use of ALC in cancer patients with persisting neurotoxicity induced by paclitaxel or cisplatin treatment. ^[3] Deze visie wordt gedeeld door andere auteurs.^[4]^[5]

Ook de neuropathische pijnen door anti-HIV medicijnen wordt door acetyl-l-carnitine tegengegaan.^[6] Ook met die stoffen zijn er geen meldingen van negatieve interacties.^[7]^[8]

De behandeling met acetyl-l-carnitine wordt door experts een pathogenetische behandeling genoemd.^[9] Dat wil zeggen dat de stoornis die achter de neuropathie schuil gaat door deze stof tegengegaan wordt.
