Adelmidrol a novel glia modulator
adelmidrol.gifAdelmidrol is a novel compound, and resembles palitoylethanolamide (PEA). The molecular structure of adelmidrol is composed of 2 palmitoylethanolamide molecules. The father of this molecule is the Italian chemist F. della Valle, pupil of professor Montelchini, the Nobel laureate for nerve growth factors.

Adelmidrol, a new chemical entity, synthesis of 2 palmitoylethanolamide molecules.

A few studies have been done on adelmidrol in animal models.

One animal model study showed that local administration adelmidrol significantly decreased weight and neo-angiogenesis in granulomatous tissue.[1] The working mechanism is simmilar to palmitoylethanolamide, and one of its mechanism is the inhibition of mast cell degranulation, and thus this novel molecule has an anti-inflammatory effect.

Chronic gingiva inflammation can be a difficult to treat medical problem in dogs. A simmilar anti-inflammatory effect was observed in these dogs, treated with a gel to reduce gingival inflammation.[2]

Twenty dogs were randomised to the adelmidrol gel and placebo. After 30 and 45 days, the dogs using the adelmidrol gel had significantly less inflammation of the gingiva.

Adelmidrol in human

A pilot study on childern with atopic dermatitis has been conducted with topical adelmidrol 2%.[3] After 4 weeks 80% of the children had no clinical signs anymore of atopic dermatitis.

It seems that mast cell stabilization is an ubiquitous target mechanism for a variety of diseases, from local inflammation to chronic neuropathic pain. Adelmidrol, being a prodrug of PEA could have an advantage due to a inbuild retard effect.
